The town goes back to the early eighteenth century. It had its ups and downs during the course of history. Once it was a blooming and prosperous as the center of sugar cane plantations. But these plantations were unfortunately destroyed during the wars of independence. The vestiges of a bygone era of prosperity are the main attractions of the city today. There are several museums and the Museo Historico Municipal is the most important. The Taller Alfarero ceramics workshop is worth a visit. And then you can relax to the music of the sea on the fine beaches that stretch beyond the workshop.

If you are looking for more than surf and salsa Western Cuba is the place you have to be in. it is a haven for hikers and nature lovers. Two UNESCO biosphere reserves in the region protect a large variety of indigenous flora and fauna. There is a trail through the Cordillera de Guaniguanico, in the Cordillera de Guaniguanico. The fissure-ridden hills of Vinales provide enough opportunities for the enthusiasts for cave diving. The ocean comes alive in colorful sea life at the Maria la Gorda. It is the ideal venue for scuba diving. And then you can spa in style at the Spanish resort of San Diego de los Banos.

The historic town of Baracoa, which lies between two bays, surrounded by sparkling blue ocean, represents Eastern Cuba at its best. It is typically Caribbean in its leisurely pace and stunning palm landscape. this is where you come for a fun and joy amidst sea spray and natural beauty. Baracoa was established by Diego Velazquez and was the first European settlement in Cuba. There are many marvelous forts in the town that stand testimony to its olden days.

Cuba has six UNESCO biosphere reserves and 14 national parks. The biosphere reserves are Cuchillas del Toa, Guanahacabibes in the west, the Sierra del Rosario, 1 ? hours from Havana, Baconao in the east, the mangroves of Cienaga de Zapata and Buena vista.
